Mixed weather!

Over the past couple of weeks we seem to have experienced all four seasons of weather, including snow!

SnowDespite the snow, we managed to get a good bonfire going in Stokes Close (see map) and were rewarded with the sun breaking through by the time we left. Unfortunately, we were not so lucky today when we had to cancel our first event of the season due to a forecast of heavy and persistent rain which proved accurate on this occasion. Whilst we try and work through most conditions, including a few showers here and there, today was just too wet.

A reminder – on those rare occasions when we do have to cancel an event  at short notice because of adverse weather, the event will be marked as “cancelled” on the Events Diary and we will send out an email to those booked to attend.

In view of this cancellation, we have added a new event for this Thursday when the forecast looks better, so please book on if you are free on that day as we still have plenty of work to do over the next few weeks.

This week should see the end of our cutting programme for the season as the sap is starting to rise in the trees, the early spring flowers are beginning to emerge and birds are starting to look for nest sites. Our priority over the next couple of weeks will be constructing dead hedges from the brash left after the cutting in Bean Close where the first shoots of bluebells are starting to emerge under the leaf litter. If we leave this work any later we run the risk of trampling down the plants and the dead hedges will provide nesting sites for several varieties of bird.

We hope to start charcoal production again from the middle of March (weather permitting) and the nature of our work will change as we move into the spring/summer season. We will need help in getting timber to the retort and loading it. Alongside this we are proposing to do more stream restoration and there are other one off events in the pipeline in order that we can keep a year round programme going.

Finally, thanks once again for all your help which we need more than ever over the next few weeks and it would be great to see those of you who have signed up but not yet been to an event. Saturday’s event is fully booked but we still have plenty of spaces on other days.
